about

Mourning Bird Choir was recorded in Northern Maine during the first two weeks of November 2020, but it was born thousands of years ago.

In October I acquired a laptop and thus, purchased an interface. I owned a few microphones, cables and assorted wires. I had some words and than a bunch more words came quickly. The music followed freely after the words.

These songs were birthed in a different section of my internal creative laboratory, it's a fuzzy new room with a great antique view of the stars and the carnival.

Captain Frank Hopkins zoomed me thru a few technical and basic recording issues but mostly we talked about Colonial Bruce Hampton and laughed a lot. He did master these songs. The voices and noises and musics were all performed, arranged and recorded by me....and the Zambi spirits that be.

This record captured an intensely creative period both in art and in life. Art imitating life. After listening back to the tracks I felt they perfectly captured the initial spirit of these songs. Could I redo them, labor on them for a bit...yes, but why? This was art being born. It keeps me alive. I'm grateful for the gift and to be able to share with you. Mourning Bird Choir is dedicated to You and my Grandfather's...and your Grandfather's too..... and John Prine.

Please put on some headphones and enjoy!

The art of creating is alive and well inside each and every one of us. These wild and wacky times we are currently living allow us all the most perfect opportunity to get in closer contact with ours, whatever it may be. So be good, do good, be kind, be patient, stay safe and create....write a story, write a letter, paint a painting or draw a picture, do some pushups, do some cartwheels, build a birdhouse, bake a cake or a pie, make a soup or a sandwich, do some karate, sing a song, grow something, dance, spend some time in nature, be thankful, stay glad!
